Part 3: Chapter 20-29 Question 9

How did they euthanize the monkeys? Was it humane?

  1. It is unfortunate to have to cause the death of an organism, especially when viruses like Ebola are hypothesized to be a defense mechanism against the careless human population, but in the situation of these infected monkeys, the euthanasia of the monkeys was the most humane resort. The method of euthanasia is to "drug" (Preston 340) the monkey in order to sedate it. After the monkey is under the full effects of the sedatives, the scientist in charge is to plunge a syringe through the monkey's rib cage and into the heart. The chemicals found in the syringe are supposed to "[kill] the monkey instantly" (Preston 340). The fact that the time is being taken to put the monkeys to sleep before receiving the drugs is as humane as it gets. The monkey will not even feel the prick of the needle before it dies; the risk of any pain for the animal is minimized to zero. In any case, the prick of the needle is nothing compared to the complications the monkey might suffer from receiving the drugs meant to kill it. Sometimes, the chemicals do not work the way they should and cause the organism to suffer for a while before they die. The method of euthanasia used by the scientists makes sure the monkeys' death is as painless as scientifically possible, meaning the method is humane.

  2. As Alejandra stated, the monkeys were euthanized by sedating them, then killing them by inserting deadly chemicals to their bodies via a syringe, which must be inserted into the monkey’s heart. I agree with Alejandra, the way they euthanized is humane because the monkeys were put to sleep, so they did not feel the prick of the syringe. The scientists were considerate enough to not let the monkeys feel even an ounce of pain before killing them. This method is effective because if they did not sedate the monkey first, then it may panic when feeling the prick of the syringe, causing a lot of chaos. Although the scientists were using monkeys as research subjects, it was nice that they did not gruesomely kills them, rather had a little compassion.

  3. As Alejandra and Julieta have stated that these monkey's were euthanized while they were a sleep was humane. But keeping all this in mind, it is still very inhumane to do something like this to an innocent organism. They don't even know what their going to go thorough. It's very sad to witness something so gruesome like this. Yes, they didn't feel the pain, but they were killed. I' am against the killing of any innocent organism. Yes, they need to test the virus on monkeys because their body structure is closer to humans, but killing them isn't answer to all this.
